The most popular “Hungarian” fish!

It is summer, and in the summer Hungarians escape Budapest and visit Lake Balaton instead. And what do they eat there? The most popular “Hungarian” fish!

You should be warned, some people will not agree on calling this the most popular “Hungarian” fish. There are some other popular fish types in Hungary, for example, carp, catfish, perch, and pike. But, when the Hungarians travel to Lake Balaton, they eat something completely different, namely the “Merluccius Merluccius“, better known as the European hake (in Hungarian “Hekk“). The funny thing is that this fish doesn’t origin from Hungary, and not even from Europe, but from the coasts of Argentina.

According to this article, the fish is captured in Argentina and transported to Hungary, where it is almost served as a “national” fish. According to Wikipedia, it is a popular fish to catch also in Europe, but the one we are eating in Hungary is supposed to origin from Argentina. It is, however, due to the popularity of the fish in Hungary that it is often considered a fish of the Hungarians, and thus it should origin from Hungary, at least in the minds of the people.

How do Hungarians eat the fish?

If you buy this fish by Lake Balaton, or somewhere else, it will most likely look something like this.

The Hungarian fish

It is normally fried in oil and server together with white bread. It is very easy to eat as the meat can easily be removed from the fish-bones (which are so big that it is no trouble at all getting rid of them).

So, the next time you want to eat a fish course in Hungary, consider the European Hake, better known as “hekk” in Hungary. But, be warned – you will not find it in normal restaurants, only by Lake Balaton, along with the “Romai part” (in Budapest), and other places with beach-like circumstances.

Dzsúzda – Coffe and Juicebar in Szigetszentmiklos

Are you looking for something really healthy to drink and eat? Or maybe just a cup of coffee to wake up? Are you in Szigetszentmiklos? Time to visit Dzsúzda!

Last week we got the chance to visit the recently opened juice-bar in Szigetszentmiklos named Dzsuzda. As the name suggest the main focus is one juices, but they do of course serve tea and coffee in addition to a sweet mixture of juices and smoothies.

The menu at Dzsuzda is changing from day to day, but they already have a couple of favorites on their menu that we believe will remain there for a long time. We drank ourselves mostly through the menu as we visited the juice bar and we also tasted a fresh salad and their raw chocolate cake. Did we like it?

Healthy is not enough, it has to be tasty as well!

We absolutely love healthy food, but it is not enough that food (and drinks) are healthy. They also have to taste well! That is why we were curious to taste the raw chocolate cake available in the juice bar. It was made up by a mixture of raw cocoa, by date, cocoa fat and some more ingredients. As it was served it was a bit cold, but waiting for a few minutes it was really tasty and it was probably the best raw cake I have ever tasted!

I am not so much of a salad guy, but the salad was also nice and tasty (but if you are a salad person it will probably taste much better for you)! The highlight was however to taste all the smoothies available in Dzsuzda. They had a tropical smoothie available, a Shrek smoothie and a chocolate smoothie. They were all very tasty (and healthy), but the highlight was of course the chocolate smoothie which tasted much like a cup of hot chocolate, except from the fact that it was cold and very healthy!

Visit Dzsuzda in Szigetszentmiklos

If you want to visit Dzsusda in Szigetszentmiklos, go ahead and visit it right away. It is open every day from 9.00 till 18.00. The address is Tököli út 26 and you can also visit their Facebook site right here.

Where is Szigetszentmiklos?

If you are a tourist coming to Budapest this juice-bar might not be so interesting for you. If you however pass by Szigetszentmiklos this might be nice to now. It is a small city located 25 kilometres from the heart of Budapest, so if you have a car you will be there in less than 30 minutes.

What does Hungarian snack taste like?

We recently bumped into a video showing Barry Lewis, a Brit guy, and in his 10 minute show he is tasting Hungarian snacks and goodies. He has no knowledge about what he is really tasting, and it is cool to see his reactions.

And it is of course interesting to see him taste the national Hungarian product (almost) named Turo Rudi. Want to take a look at the video? Here it is!

The Box Donut in Budapest

Yesterday I went out to grab a burger at the Burger House near Nyugati in Budapest. As I walked towards Burger House I noticed The Box Donut, a new donut house just next to it, so I grabbed a box of 6 donuts to test it all.

The Box Donut

The Box Donut is a place for those who want high quality at a quite high price. All donuts cost 390 HUF, which is quite a lot more than a donut in McDonalds, but the quality is also very different. All donuts made in The Box Donut are handmade, they are prepared with the best sort of chocolate, they are fried in nut oil and no conservatives and so are used.

What many people find interesting about The Box Donut is that the donuts do not have the typical round shape, but they are shaped a square. You will find the normal vanilla and chocolate donut here, but there are also much more exotic and cool looking donuts available. What about a donut with vanilla cream, chocolate and Oreo biscuits on the top? Or maybe a Creme Brulee donut? There is also a triple chocolate donut available and several donuts in different colors and with all sorts of fillings and decorations.

I bought six donuts and of course I did not manage to eat all six of them, but I tasted them all and liked every single one of them. I will probably not buy six donuts to eat them myself later, but if I walk in the area and want to eat something sweet and combine it with something to drink, this will work out just as good for me as a coffee house or a confectionery.

Tasty burgers in Burger House

Would you like to eat a tasty burger in Budapest, but in your mind McDonalds and Burger King is everything else than tasty hamburgers? Why not visit the Burger House located next to Nyugati square, just somewhere between the WestEnd Citycenter and Sir Lancelot.

I visited Burger House not long ago to grab a hamburger with my family. We ordered quite a lot of different burgers, and for some reason making the order and getting it right seemed to be very hard, so the waiter came back several times to fix the order. After quite some waiting we manage to get almost what we ordered, but those who got what they ordered were really satisfied and the taste of the burgers was for sure among the best in Budapest. What was a nice plus was that the chef preparing the burgers noticed that we had a pregnant person in the group, and automatically he prepared the burger so that even the pregnant lady could eat it without fearing meat that has not been well enough prepared.

Burger House in Budapest

The prices of the burgers are between 1500-2500 HUF in general, but if you are crazy then you can also go for the giant burgers with 2x450g meat in them and lots of cheese. Of course the prices for these giant burgers are much higher, but if you want to try, then go for it!

All in all we were not completely satisfied with the overall experience because of the mess making the order and so on, but the food that we were served was great, so we would have no problem returning to Burger House in Budapest another time to grab some more burgers.

[stbpro id=”info”]There are several other Burger House restaurants in Budapest. You can also find one in Lurdy Haz, in Duna Plaza and in Óbuda. But the one near Nyugati is for sure the one with the best location.[/stbpro]

Where to eat on Christmas Eve in Budapest?

I am coming to Budapest to celebrate Christmas, but would like to eat my Christmas dinner somewhere else than in my hotel. Can you please give me the name on some restaurants in Budapest that will be open on Christmas eve?

Thank you for the question. We have a special article related to this subject which is called Christmas in Budapest, which you can find here. The truth is that most restaurants stay closed on December 24th and they take a well deserved break on this day. But, for those few restaurants that decide to stay open, they have a nice evening ahead, because people are looking hard to find restaurants open on December 24th, meaning that these get fully booked quite fast.

So, if you want a nice Christmas dinner in Budapest on December 24th we would at the moment recommend one of the following two restaurants. Do not forget that you need to book a table as soon as possible, so just use the table reservation link and fill in the forms, and we will take care of the table reservation for you and send you a confirmation of the reservation in an email (for free of course).

1. Rezkakas

This is a very traditional, but quite expensive, Hungarian restaurant. They do have live gipsy music and a main course from their menu normally cost between 4000 and 8000 Hungarian Forint. That is quite steep, but based on customer reviews and feedback we have received, people do praise this place and really do enjoy their visits. If you want to have a nice Christmas dinner with lots of Hungarian food on the menu, this is probably the place. The restaurant is located in the heart of Budapest, not far from the St. Stephens Basilica.

2. Aszu

This restaurant is located on the other side of the street from Rezkakas. If were were to eat our Christmas dinner in Budapest we would probably pick this one, but that is just because we really like the food in Aszu. The restaurant has received lots of great critics from food critics and magazines, and the food served is really in the upper class. The price level is probably a bit cheaper than in Rezkakas with main courses costing between 10 and 20 Euro, in general.
