Hungary’s most popular festival!

Sziget Festival, the island of freedom

Hungary has some really good festivals during summers. Probably the most popular one is Sziget fesztivál which is always held in the beginning of August every year since 1993. This year Sziget will take place on August 11th-18th in the Hungarian capital Budapest! If you never visited Budapest before it is a really good opportunity to go and spend an amazing time in this beautiful city during the festival.

Sziget 2014

The festival will be held on the beautiful island (Hajógyári sziget, that is why the name Sziget) in the very heart of Budapest. Sziget provides non stop party, lot of live concerts with worldwide known artists and bands. The festival attracts around 400,000 people from all around the world. There are not only concerts during the festival, but Sziget gives you a real festival feeling with many other cultural programs like theater, circus and other venues as well.

Sziget Festival 2012 live on YouTube

Sziget Festival 2012 has been going on for some days, but yesterday was the official opening with artists such as Placebo and others performing. A new thing this year is that the festival is broadcasted on YouTube, so there you can follow the events on the Main Stage, A38 Stage and the Otp Bank World Stage live… This is an amazing chance to enjoy the festival live on the net, especially for those who would like to be there, but could not be there for some reason.

Don’t you know what Sziget Festival is? It is one of the best festivals in Europe, and each summer about 400 artists come to perform at this event in front of several hundred thousand people dancing, singing along and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere on this great festival in Budapest.

Tonight, August 9th, you can for example see the follow artists live:
Tankcsapda, Citizens, Korn, Maxima Park, Caro Emerald and quite some more.

On August 10th, you can see the following artists live:
Viza, The Black Seeds, Wild Beasts, La Selva Sur, Compact Disco, La Brass Banda, Bebel Gilberto, Roy Paci, Shantel and quite some more…

On August 11th you can see the following artists live:
Jungle by Night, Imam Baldi, Sergent Garcia, Two Door Cinema Club, Carbonfools, Sum 41, Molotov, Fink, Katzenjammer and some more….

On August 12th you can see the following artists live:
The Subways, Freshfabrik, Figli Di Madre Ignata, Paolo Nutini, Rotfront, Leningrad, The Ting Tings, Yonderboi and some more.

Still, there is a problem, and that is that this broadcast is supposed to be limited for people in Hungary, so for people surfing the net outside Hungary, this is supposed to be closed, and you will not be able to see it (you should still try though). If you try, and it does not work, the problem is that you do not have a Hungarian IP address and we have written some articles earlier about how you can fix that problem, and enjoy broadcasts limited to Hungary online from all around the world. If you are interested, check out the following two articles:

How to watch Hungarian TV from abroad?
How to get a Hungarian IP address?

We wish you good luck and hope you will enjoy the live broadcast from Sziget Festival in Budapest and Hajógyári Sziget just as much as we do!

How to get from Budapest Airport to Sziget Festival (Obudai Island)?

I will arrive to Budapest Airport Terminal 2, and wonder how I can get from here to the Obudai Island where the Sziget Fes(z)tival is arranged. Can you please help?

In general we would recommend arranging with an airport transfer which is not especially expensive, but it will take you directly from the airport to the island and it is a very efficient way of getting there. Still, if you want a more advanced and public transportation way of getting to the Obudai Island, Sziget Fesztival, the following can be a working solution.

First travel with bus 200E from Budapest Airport Terminal 2 to Köbánya Kispest (metro station). From there you can travel with the metro to Deák Tér, then change to the red metro and travel to Batthány Tér (red metro). There you can change to the HEV traveling towards Szentendre. You need to stop at Filatorgiat, and then you are there.

Another option, much easier, is to travel with the special bus for the Sziget Festival from Liszt Ferenc Airport (Budapest Airport). This will be operating between August 4th and 8th between 9 in the morning and 00.30 every day, every second hour. On August 13th this bus will be operating from 3.00 til 14.00 transporting people back to the airport. We do not know anything about the actual cost of this bus, but it seems like a good solution to get from the airport to Obudai Island
(this information is valid for Sziget Fesztival in 2012…)

In case you are confused, Obudai Island is the same as Hajogyári sziget and Óbudai sziget. These are just other versions of the same place.

Amy Winehouse, Good Charlotte, Kasabian and The Maccabees to Sziget Festival

Recently several new bands have accepted their invitation to the Sziget Festival in Budapest in 2011, so so far it seems like if this years Sziget Festival will be an amazing event again, as usual. The newest names on the list are Amy Winehouse, The Maccabees, Kasabian and Good Charlotte. Besides these there are many others name which you can find on our page dedicated to the Sziget Festival.

So, mark the dates: August 10-15! Those are the official dates of the Sziget Festival in 2011.

Heat wave and Sziget Festival

Some people say a new heatwave is coming to Budapest this week. It probably depends on what weather forecast you see, but if its true, it should turn very warm from Tuesday/Wednesday. Great news, though I am afraid that it might become a bit to hot, at least for me!

This coming week the annual Sziget Festival starts as well, and all big news companies speak about all the mud still on the island, due to the heavy rain this summer. But, with a new heat wave coming up, this will hopefully not create big problems.

Tonight will be the start of the festival, though the official start is on Wednesday. Kispál és a Borz will enter the main stage of the festival at 20.00!

Green Day to Sziget Festival?

Green Day

Before you start rejoicing notice the questionmark in the title. This is not at all sure, but I just noticed someone who requested on the official Sziget page that Green Day should come to Sziget and today as I worked with the page presenting some concerts in cities near Budapest I noticed that Green Day will perform in June 2010. Of course that does not mean anything at all where Green Day will perform two months before the Sziget Festival in 2010, but at least it is possible to hope.

So this text is not based on any real facts or nothing, but it might only represent a hope from thousands of Hungarian fans that Green Day may return to Budapest and to the Sziget Festival in 2010.
