Spring Fair in Budapest

The Spring Fair of 2016 will be arranged between March 25th and April 24th. We visited the Spring Fair a few days ago and to be honest, it is simply brilliant. In a way we liked it even more than the Christmas fair, because there are not that many places to shop, making it easier to walk around, there are more free space, but the things for sale are brilliant and feels more Hungarian than the stuff you buy at the Christmas market. In addition you can buy chimney cakes, langos and lots of other goodies, making sure that you will not leave Budapest hungry!

If you have time, do not miss out out on the Spring Fair at the Vörösmarty Square, available until April 24th in 2016!

Budapest video from 1973 – Must see for Budapest fans

Are you a Budapest fan? If the answer is yes then you will love this Budapest video from 1973. It is a 30 minute film simply showing what Budapest was like, presented by the Hungarian singer Kati Kovacs.

We by coincidence bumped into this film in the library of the Norwegian TV channel NRK, so you can watch the film there if you want to.

Press the link above to visit the video on the NRK website and start watching the website. It is amazing to see the changes that has happened in the city since then. Just take a look at the following picture from the film which was made back then of what is today one of the nicest hotels in town, the Gresham Palace (Four Seasons).

There are lots of clips like the one above that is interesting, but you should be warned that the first 10 minutes are most interesting, because after that they start to sing a lot and you do not get to see as much of Budapest anymore.

And one more thing… it is often just as interesting to notice what you can not see as what you can see. Lots of buildings present today can not be seen in the video, you can see cars driving on the area which is the Danube Promenade today, and so much more. Enjoy the film and watch it.

It is supposed to be available all across the world, but if you should have problems watching NRK from abroad, just press the link to get help.

Lots of Budapest in Strike Back season 1 episode 10

We love Budapest in films and TV series and if you want to see a lot of Budapest then Strike Back season 1 and episode 10 is perfect to watch for you. Strike Back is an action TV series, quite similar to 24 and it also reminds us a bit of NCIS: Los Angeles.

Castle of Buda
Castle of Buda in Strike Back

In Strike Back season 10 the good guys are hunting a terrorist and his affiliate who want to blow up a bomb during a peace conference arranged in the castle in Budapest. There are two guys with bombs attached to them and we see the good guys played by Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester hunt down those bad guys. This hunt leads to scenes all around Budapest and you will get to see famous attractions and also see a bomb explode inside a tram.

Explosion in tram
A tram blows up near Batthyany ter

Most of the clips are very well made and they have done their best for this to be an authentic episode from Budapest. There are of course some small mistakes as when they show a tram starting from Batthyany ter running with number 47 with Deak Ter as starting point and not Batthyany ter. But, who cares? The tram is about to be blown up anyway!

Gellert Hill Panorama
Beautiful panorama clip from above the Gellert Hill

As you can see on the three pictures already there are lots of beautiful clips from Budapest in this episode of Strike Back, so if you do not mind explosions and action, then go ahead and watch this episode of Strike Back right away, and get a little taste of Budapest on this first day of February 2016.

International Wine Festival 2016

Wine festival 2016The International Wine Festival in Budapest will come back in 2016 as every other year and if you are looking for the dates for the event you will have to look no further.

The International Wine Festival 2016 will be arranged in the Buda Castle area again and the dates this year are September 8th to 11th. That is from Thursday till Sunday and that might not tell you anything, but for those of us who have been in town for a while that tells us that this years festival will be one day shorter than it has been for a very long time. Is this due to lack of visitors? Or how come that it has been shortened with one day? We do not know, but that means no wine tasting on Wednesday, only from Thursday till Sunday!

Mangalica festival in Budapest 2016

The Mangalica festival is a free festival, meaning that you can freely walk around inside the festival area, and the only thing you pay for are the actual products you decide to buy.

The Mangalica festival will be arranged from February 12th-14th in 2016.

Netflix has arrived to Hungary

There has been news on the Internet telling that Netflix is getting closer to launching in Hungary, but it still caught us by surprise as Netflix launched on January 6th. In other words you do no longer need to use a VPN to watch Netflix in Hungary, because if you visit Netflix you can start watching already.

If you live abroad and only come to Hungary for a short travel then this is nice to know and if you live in Hungary you will probably enjoy this as well. It is worth knowing that so far all content available in the Hungarian version of Netflix can only be enjoyed in English and with English subtitles, meaning that there is no support for the Hungarian language on Hungarian Netflix yet.

Netflix in Hungary

There are quite a lot of good films available on Netflix, so you can for example watch The Dark Knight, Kung Fu panda, Madagascar, Timmy Time, Max and Ruby, Orange is the New Black, Spartacus, Jessica Jones, Sherlock Holmes, Life as we Know It, The Prince of Egypt, Shrek, Gravity, Man on Fire, Lord of the Rings, World War Z, Jack Reacher and lots of other films. But again, these films are all in English with English subtitles available.

But, there are of course lots of content lacking from the Hungarian Netflix as well, for example the popular Netflix series House of Cards is lacking and a very big amount of films. That is why you might still want to use a Netflix region switcher so that you can watch content in other Netflix regions from Hungary, but still, it is a big breakthrough for online streaming in Hungary that Netflix has finally arrived.

Enjoy watching and do not forget to work and get some fresh air!

What does Hungarian snack taste like?

We recently bumped into a video showing Barry Lewis, a Brit guy, and in his 10 minute show he is tasting Hungarian snacks and goodies. He has no knowledge about what he is really tasting, and it is cool to see his reactions.

And it is of course interesting to see him taste the national Hungarian product (almost) named Turo Rudi. Want to take a look at the video? Here it is!

Star Wars coming to Budapest tomorrow

It is almost bigger than Christmas… Star Wars is coming to town. Tomorrow it is time for the premiere of the film in Hungary and just after midnight tomorrow (meaning early Friday morning) the biggest fans will be able to see Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

Star Wars in Budapest

In other words, a few minutes after midnight, early Friday morning, or late Thursday night, the biggest fans will stand in line by the different cinemas in Budapest to see The Force Awakens. The ticket sale for the films started a month ago (or more) and all tickets were sold out quickly. So if you want a ticket for Star Wars in Budapest one of the first days then you should hurry up and get hold of them right away. There are some performances from 10.00 on Friday morning and for those there are still free tickets, so if you want to be among the first to see Star Wars in Budapest, then this is your chance!

It will probably take ages before we get to see the newest Star Wars film on Netflix, but if you want to watch the older Star Wars films then you can still buy them on Amazon.com or watch them there online.

If you are going to watch Star Wars in Budapest do not forget about the fact that most of the time the film will be dubbed, so if you want to watch it in English with Hungarian subtitles, check before you buy the tickets to make sure that you get tickets for the right performance. Enjoy!

Tradition and street food side by side – Advent Feast at the Basilica

The annual Christmas market arranged in front of the St. Stephens Basilica in Budapest will soon open. This is a beautiful market working very well together with the Christmas market at the Vörösmarty Square. Beneath you can find the official press release for the Christmas market with information about the event and more.

Please note that this year there will not only be a Christmas market, but also a street food festival connected to the Christmas market, making the walk from the St. Stephens Basilica all the way down to the Chain Bridge a mixture of Christmas and delicious food!

The most important information about the market is that it will open on November 27th and stay open until January 1st.

Christmas market St Stephens Basilica

Christmas market press release!

During the Advent fair on Saint Stephen’s Square, the area of the Basilica is turning into a magical festive quarter. From the last weekend of November visitors may enter this joyful world decorated with Christmas lights. Here the festive ambience of the 5-week long Christmas preparation is ensured by almost 200 programmes, the handicrafts of 80 vendors and the international food and drink selection of the street food section in Zrínyi Street. Every night visitors might admire the 3D light paintings on the monumental façade of the Basilica, while children can enjoy the huge ice rink around the 9-meter tall Christmas tree or they can bake honey-cake hearts, and everybody can dance together at the folk dance evenings. Following the traditions, on 1st of January Lentil Day is going to be held, when the fortune-making New Year’s dish – prepared by different recipes – will be available at the gastronomic exhibitors and street food vendors.

The square in front of Saint Stephen’s Basilica – which is one of Hungary’s most important churches and tourist attractions – is going to be the most spectacular and eventful meeting point in Budapest from 27 November to 2 January. Last year Saint Stephen’s Basilica got into the CNN’s Top 10 list of the most photographed places in the world, and hopefully the visitors’ stunning photos will flood again the social media.

This year the Advent Feast at the Basilica is welcoming its visitors with the largest and the most spectacular visual attraction of the country. Colourful short movies will come to life in 3D on the 1000  m2 façade of the Basilica, while the festive lights of the square and the Inner City will provide a magical setting for a winter walk. During the 35 days of the Advent fair families and groups of friends will find a great variety of programmes, exclusive events and charity functions.
The 200 m2 ice rink around the magically decorated Christmas tree will remain the centre of the fair for the greatest joy of the children who can use it free of charge or even participate in the skating courses at the weekends. In the “Hunger for Love” bakery, set up by the Hungarian Inter-Church Aid, volunteers and visitors will prepare honey-cake hearts together with special surprise guests supporting the charity to thank its donors for their generosity.

At the fabulous wooden houses in front of the Basilica the fair’s visitors may choose between countless carefully pre-selected, great quality handcrafted gifts and the design items of talented young artists. This year the craftsmenʼs stalls will occupy a larger area including the way connecting Bajcsy-Zsilinszky and Hercegprímás Streets next to the Basilica, to offer even more products than in the previous years. Amazed by the abundance of gifts visitors may taste the holiday season’s most popular dishes along with this year’s novelties. While having fun outdoors in the cold winter weather, they can pair the steaming hot dishes with selected hot cocktails.

The Advent Feast at the Basilica is getting an exciting new addition this year. Street food, which was a successful debut last year, will take over the whole Zrinyi Street this year, and fill it with exotic food, Advent delicacies and the flavours of international cuisine. From Sas Street to Széchenyi Street the coolest Hungarian food trucks and street food vendors will be present such as Zing Burger, KolBice, BudDog, Paneer, MexKitchen, Balkán Grill, Befaló Bill, DiVino and Korhely. More than 30 exhibitors will provide food meant to be eaten on the street such as pancake, grilled sandwich, soup, “new wave” flat bread, lángos, pljeskavica, Italian sweets and salty titbits – to seduce the workers of the surrounding office buildings from the boring daily menus and to treat those who will come here to check out the greatest street food extravaganza of the holiday season. Following the New Year’s traditions Lentil Day will close the series of the fair’s gastronomic events on 1st of January.
